As many of you know, we host a wild bird pheasant hunt on a ranch near Huron evry year, and it is open to PGCA members. Its all wild birds, sometimes we get sharptails and prairie chickens, tough walking sometimes and we live in the ranch house and we get home cooke meals from Randy and Sue, longtime friends of mine.

This year we only had four people come, must be the ickonomy. They were Mark Vollinger from Denver, Dr. Dick Dow from Fullerton, CA , Pete Kappes from Ada, MN and me.

We came to SoDak, thereby proving the state saying

We were a little north of Wessington Springs. Now to some in Philadelphia and other fancy places, we lack culture, but out here on the plains, we have everything we need. We even have opera, just like those folks in New York.

And it is a little known fact that a writer by name of William Shakespear is from here. Here is the Ann Hathaway cottage right there in Wessington Springs. So we grabbed culture by the tail and wrung every last bit out.

Dick brought his new pooch, a little Gordon setter. Dont see too many of them out here.  He made a special trip to Oregon to get the dog and its out of some well known Gordon breeding. It was the dogs first time on wild birds, and wounded birds that fight back, and first time for snow, and he did well.

Mark brought his dog too, and it was a game hog for sure.

The fields are big, usually a quarter, and lots of room to shoot and miss.

We had a fresh breeze from the northwest, a gentle prairire zephyr at 30-40 mph, so a shooter had too give an extra Cadillac of lead in front. And then it turned cold, something about a blizzard, but we few , we hardy few, were unfazed.

If the pictures look dark, its because it was dark. Dark, windy, snowy and cold.

What's a little horizontal snow, a gentle breeze and a little frozen moisture to a dedicated hunter?

Dick is probably thinking about moving from SoCal to SoDak.

Playing with the puppies.  Or maybe they were trying to get warm.

Dick and Pete used Parker hammer lifters the first day, and each managed to limit out with them.

Pete and a grade 1 lifter.

Dick Dow and his grade 4 lifter, one of the higher condition ones around, from what I have seen. Lots of case color and outstanding engraving.

Mark and pheasant. He is trying to maintain an arms length relationship.

He is holding his new GHE 20ga, a nice gun.

Looking at the gun line up over lunch. Top to bottom, My DHE 20/32, Dick's DHE 12/28 and some kind of Fox 16ga owned by Dick.

It was so cold and windy, my western hat kept getting blown off, so I had to switch to a stocking cap and billed hat. I even had to wear a down coat.

We had a good time, plenty of limits, everyone had a chance to limit on a daily basis, and we had great company. Pete and Mark looking at guns.

Many thanks to Dick, who brought some fine California wines with him, including a favorite of mine, Seasmoke Pinot Noir. Also, many thanks to Pete, who brought sacks of fresh dug potatos from his farm in the Red River Valley. And he brought Grain Belt beer, another favorite. Now I know its not  trendy artisan stuff like Sierra Pale ale or Fat Tire, but its good northern beer, and its not owned by a multinational headquartered in Belgium.

So, until next year. If a PGCA member wants to hunt the way it used to be, contact me and come to SoDak with us.

Dick's little setter with his first retrieve. The bird was almost bigger than him. Dick's setter is flanked by Pete's six month old Golden....no floor mop that dog.

Bruce,

Looks like you guys had a great time. Dicks hammer gun looks like a real beauty. Just wondering, is Marks dog a pointer or a flusher?
