Hi I am new here and need to know what the buttplate on my parker should be like. IT is a P model with a#2 receiver in 12 ga, it has 32" twisted steel barrels and is in great shape.  It now has a wood buttplate that is checkered and looks like it has a dog or ducks head carved in the center of it . if any one knows or has a picture of the buttplate that should be on it I would like to see it . Thanks

You can find a great repo buttplate for less than $20.00 on Gunbroker.  On E bay somtimes the real ones are offered, but I would not pay more than $40 . Look on E bay there is one for $16

Midway USA for about $13. It may be on backorder and take a couple weeks to get it shipped. You can get them with or without the spur.

The #2 frame buttplate has a different figure embossed than do other Parker buttplates.  Maybe someone will post a picture of a #2 buttplate.

eBay #110311471665 ...a #2 frame buttplate. I've bought some from this vendor and they are fine. He has other sizes including 0 frames. Galazan's are the best but pricey.

Mike, if you remove your broken buttplate, you may find that it is stamped with a "1".  An 0 Frame gun with a 1 Frame buttplate is not uncommon.  Your buttplate figure is different from a normal 0 Frame figure.

I think it is safe to say that the DHBP changed over the 60 or so years it was used. TPS and "the book" have photos of the variations. Bill is right, however, my 1885 0 frame T0 16g toplever has a #1 sized plate rather than the diminutive 0 frame plate. What one needs to do is measure the exisiting plate or butt size if the plate is missing to insure a proper fit. Unlike say a Fox or Smith buttplate there is little excess material on the bordered DHBP to accomodate much grinding during fitting. Do not just rely on the frame size when ordering a repalcement plate.

Bill you were right - it is marked "1" on the back.  Thank you for the help.  I had been  unable to find a buttplate with the dog holding a woodcock (snipe?) in 0 frame size.

Don thanks and I will give the "One" size a try, then the O.

It is neat gun by-the-way.  5lbs 12oz with 28" barrels.  The barrels were made by Walter King ("WK"  barrel flat stamp) and when I was running the "Truth Gauge" wall thickness gauge down them I kept thumping the dial indicator cause it looked like it was stuck.  The minimum wall thickness is 27 thousanths.  1-3/4 x 2-3/4 x 13-5/8ths.

Thanks again for the help.

Best,

Mike

Mike, your gun probably has a #1 stock and the #0 buttplate will be too small.  Russ, a 0 Frame buttplate has the figure of a setter puppy facing left, no bird in his mouth.  The 1 Frame is the one that Mike posted a picture of.  The buttplate installed on specific guns has more to do with the size of the stock than the size of the frame of the gun.  There are guns with #1 frames factory equipped with #0 stocks and guns with #0 frames and #1 stocks.  The Parker Story pictures various buttplate configurations, but is not too specific on frame sizes for the individual buttplates.  The retriever looking dog, deeply set in the #2 size buttplate, appears on guns all the way to #7 frame guns.  I don't think that any buttplates are stamped on the back with any frame number higher than "2".  I could be way off base here.  Let me know.  I don't know which buttplate was installed on 1 1/2 frame guns, but I suspect it is the #1.  I'll have to go to TPS to look at pictures.

Mike, save your self a lot of hassel. Repair your old buttplate, easily done with acra-glas dyed black. The #1 reproduction plates I have seen were made from a broken plate and you can see the repair line, plus the spur does not always fit right. If you want to try the repair email me and I can give you the details. My email james.akins @gmail.com

Is this common ,I just picked up a VH 16 ga. 0 frame with a 2 on the back of the plate and has a peak. I dont think it is the right stock but it is a very good fit. did they make any other 0 frame larger than a 16 ? The stock on this gun is a higher grade wood than the forend (I think ) but has a bad repair in my eyes. Gun was made in 1903 but not in the book.

I would assume that a 0 Frame gun with a #2 buttplate did not come from the factory that way.  However, the 0 and 1 Frame guns with the 1 and 0 stocks is a factory method of achieving the weight specified on the order.  Those combinations are rather common.

Ok  I will attempt to post a few pictures of my shotgun.

I an curious as to the checkering on the side panels as I can't find any referance to the one I have it is stamped with a P on the water table, but the engraving that is left on the receiver looks like a PH, all comments are appericated. Thanks Herb.
