Is the PGCA going to have a booth or table at the Las Vegas Antique Arms Show at the Riviera Hotel & Casino  on January 16,17, & 18, 2009 ? ... I'm willing display some of my hammer guns and to help in any way I can.

I have been 3 times.  Doug Turnbull gave a great show about how people fake Parkers to make them more valuable. It is really a great place to see a lot of high dollar guns.

GEE ... I had no idea that there was so little interest in the January 16. 17, and 18, Las Vegas Gun Show at the Riviera Hotel/Casino among the PGCA membership  ... The January Las Vegas show is one of the best in the country but I guess there's only a handful of  PGCA members living west of the Mississippi River, and very few of those folks actually attend the Vegas show.

I plan to attend the show, and for anyone who's interested, all PGCA members     and friends are invited to my Second Annual SUNDAY Lunch Gathering and Bull Session" at "1:00 PM Sunday aftrenoon in the BUFFET area of the Riviera Hotel/Casino ... The food is good, and the buffet prices are very reasonable.

I will be going as usual. Last year was such a surprise on how many dealers "DID NOT ATTEND"!

Four or five years ago the place was packed in the Sporting Arms area. I will say that last year the antique and misc. area was huge.

We should not be surprised to see even poorer attendance at this one.

Jim,

You should know by now, that with the current administration, the PGCA has no life west of Louisville!!  Ah for the days of Ron Kirby!  However, the A.H. Fox Collectors Association will be having a table there and I suspect the L.C. Smith boys will be there as well.

Dean,

I'm thinking this is going to be a great show.   All of those down on their luck California folks will be walking in the door with the good stuff.   Since apparently the dealers are all staying home and Jim, Dave, my dad,  and myself are apparently the only folks who are going to be in attendance............  It should be a good time.

I'm sorry - but there are two different topics going on in this thread.

First topic - to Patrick - outstanding!!  I was at this event two years ago (last year, I was in Haiti - sorry I missed it!!)  If I can make it this year - can you post up your Table number??  My thanks!

Second topic - to David.  I do not know you.  And based on your posts in this thread - let me explain something to you.  PGCA is a volunteer organization.  What that means - in short - is that it is NOT an "Administration". It is folks who "make it happen" by volunteering their time, effort, interest - and in many cases "money".  If *you* want to see PGCA expand into your area - then it is simple.  Do not blame the current "Administration" - rather:  blame yourself.  Want the "hey days" of the past? Great - make it happen.

Personally - I can say that.  In the past years - I will not tell you how much money I've spent - and asked for nothing back from PGCA.  BUT - I do - and have - offered my expertise and experience if it advances the betterment of all PGCA Members and Parker enthusiasts.

So here is my challenge to you..  Either make PGCA better - or stop taking swipes at the existing Members.  If you don't try to improve it - you really have nothing to complain about, nor any basis for doing so.

My best to you....

John D.

John,

Maybe we got spoiled from the years the PGCA did have tables at Las Vegas.  It does leave a bad taste in westerners mouths that the PGCA hasn't been at Las Vegas since 2004, when they have been at every Vintage Cup on the east coast, and are now having tables at the January Greenwich, Conn. show.  At least five, maybe six, of the eight years The Vintage Cup was at Sandanona I was one of the members manning the PGCA booth there, and I enjoyed every minute of it, storms, rain, mud and all.  In 2003, 2005 and 2006 I came all the way from Washington State.

I will have to admit, that after an email from Mr. Day, that I misstated the case and it is really "no life west of Denver."

I understand your point of view - but again - you see, in my view - PGCA is a collection of folks who are location agnostic - and rather moreso - enthusiast specific (Parker shotguns).  And, to that point:

.....I misstated the case and it is really "no life west of Denver."
And as you live in Washington - I look forward to you taking the mantle to make that change?

Again - my point is - if you think there is a problem - either change it, or choose not to.  If you choose to - you will have a lot of support.  If you choose not to - then you have no basis for complaints and casting aspersions.

In my world - it really is that easy.  In that - that's all there is.  There is no more..

Best to you, Dave

John

I sent Dave a list of about 12 PGCA meetings/get togethers between Louisville and Denver which occurred between 2003 and now.

Its true that the PGCA has not had an exhibit in Las Vegas since 2004 but had for five years running before then. A good west coast member got tired of hauling guns back and forth and running the table and nobody has stepped up to provide a worthy exhibit and man the table.  It takes about 10-20 nice Parkers to put together a meaningful display, and nobody else wants to fly guns or drive long distances. Lots of times people will say the PGCA ought to do this or that but there is no Mr. PGCA, its just a person or two that step up and get the matter done.  You can count on the fingers of one hand the members that have enough guns and haul them around to exhibit. Those people get a bit weary of folks saying the PGCA ought to do this or that when it boils down to only a few people. Some people with nice collections refuse to exhibit them because of jealous comments by others so they say to hell with it and could care less about exhibiting.

Here is thought I had;

STEP #1

The PGCA should establish a show committee.  This committee will be made up of (X) number of people and be chaired by (TBD).  The responsibility of this committee will be to pick (X) number of gun shows per year where the PGCA would like to have a presence.  Criteria for a show will be established by the committee but should TRY to take into account that the membership of the PGCA is throughout the US.  I think a short list of quality shows throughout the US will be quite easy to establish.

STEP #2

Establish a Parker theme for each show.  You will go online and state the show and the theme and put out a call to all PGCA membership that you are soliciting their support in supplying guns for the theme.  This will be done well in advance so there is time to plan.

Possible Themes

1.         Parker hammer guns

2.         Parker TROJAN guns

3.         Parker 32 inch guns

4.         Parker 34 inch guns

5.         Parker 10 gauges

6.         Parker 410 gauges

7.         Parker 28 gauges

8.         Parker 20 gauges

9.         REMINGTON guns

10.       Parker Vent rib guns

11.       Parker Skeet guns

12.       Parker Trap guns

13.       Parker Upgrades

14.       Parker Damascus

15.       The butt ugly parkers(I have some of these)

16.       The list is endless….

Now the ENTIRE membership is responsible for rounding out the display with their guns and they have incentive to attend the show and participate.  Now you are not flying collections around the country and you are not putting the burden on a small group.  It becomes one guy and one gun.  If 30 guys are attending the Louisville show and the call is for 20 gauge Parkers I think you have a good chance of getting a quality display of guns. You are putting collections together for the weekend and then breaking them up.  Imagine 20-30-40 Parker single barrel trap guns in one place, or a dozen 32” 20 gauges, or ??????.  Everyone’s Parker tastes are different.

I purposely left the graded guns out of the themes because I believe that 90% of the PGCA membership does not own C,B,A grades.  My point is the grade does not matter.  The gathering of people does.  The display of unique guns is just as appealing as graded guns in my opinion.  Guns will be bought and sold, new members will be sighed up.  Raffle tickets will be sold even if the display is all Trojan guns.

This is just one other way of  looking at it.  I think you folks can point out the flaws in my thinking and possibly improve the idea, or just let it drop.

Pat,

I agree  what ever the grade or gauge, holding a classic gun with the history is magic.  If they could only talk.
