The Autumn issue of Parker Pages is now at the publishers. We are calling for articles on upland hunting in the Winter Issue which will close 15 October. We would like a book review of Woodcock by John Alden Knight, and The Book of the American Woodcock by W G Sheldon

Articles on upland hunting, upland guns and related topics are welcome

Best, Austin

This sure turned out to be a fun thread :)

Austin - who were the artists that did the two book covers?

I would settle for one of Lynn Brogue Hunts woodcock prints to be put along side the other LBH's in my gun parlor. They do not show up on eBay very often, must be a scarce item.

Some other very worthwhile books on woodcock shooting are -

Woodcock Ways by Henry Marion Hall, illustrated by Ralph Ray, Oxford University Press 1946, a delightful book on all aspects of woodcock lore and hunting with wonderful color illustrations.

Woodcock Shooting by Edmund W. Davis, Wilderness Adventures Press, Inc. 2001 (originally published in 1908) illustrated by Brett James Smith, a very interesting read with a great deal of the author's recorded data and with a touch of mystery.

Timberdoodle! by Frank Woolner, Crown Publishers 1974, illustrated with a great many black and white photographs of hunts including photos of Andy Devine and Grits Gresham in Louisana, Tap Tapply, Paul Kukonen, Charles Waterman, George Bird Evans and other notables. My copy is inscribed "To Tap Tapply- Who swears he can't shoot, can't cast, can't write- yet had a major role in the conception of this book! Frank Woolner"

- and there are others besides these and the ones Austin has requested reviews on.

I killed a double on woodcock once when I was about 20 years old. With the same gun and nearby the same spot that I'd killed my first awhile before. I didn't know till years later what a big deal it was and of course have never done it again. I'd join the Woodcock Club but I didn't have a witness other than the dog.

"I have only ever once witnessed the woodcock carrying a chick to safety, this one had it trapped between its thighs and took it over a tall hedge, put it down and then tried the broken wing trick."

This is a 1971 catalog page; the Parker appears to be the same 1 1/2 frame twenty now on display on the mezzanine of the new hunting and fishing department.

I can't get a clear picture of it when I attempt to enlarge the image you have posted but could it be L.L.'s CHE sixteen? I tried to get a look at the checkering on the wrist and compare it to the pictures in the Julia's catalog lot# 1280 of the March 13th, '07 auction.

Here's a little fellow that has graced the top of the toilet in the lav off my library for 35 years. He has had an eyefull of some pretty ladies "in flagarente"!

Dean; This is either a DH or CH twenty; the placard on it says LL ordered this heavy twenty because he had lost sight in one eye, and was fearful of losing sight in the other due to recoil. I think it is a 7 1/2 pound, 32 inch gun, but it was enclosed in a glass case beside the fireplace. It is not the 16 auctioned at Julia's; perhaps LL traded that gun in when he lost the eye.

Was it a detached retina that caused the loss of vision? The shock of repeated recoil would certainly contribute.

The CHE hung on Leon Gorman's wall well after L.L. had passed but I'm not contesting which Parker it is. I'm sure you are correct about which Parker is depicted in the '71 catalog.

Regards, Dean

CORRECTION::: I just looked at that picture of Leon Gorman's office and the Parker on the wall is NOT the CHE. :? Actually, the one on the wall looks very small like a 28 ga. possibly a 20 but the barrels look to be 26" or 28"

This little guy has been hanging out in my gun room for about twelve years, last time it had any action ,one of my Britts climbed up on the lazy boy, plucked him off the wall and I found her carrying it around in the living room ! Thats why he looks a little rough around the edges !
